At first I thought it was just hyperbole from Republican lawmakers and their mob rule voters. But the prevailing wisdom now? Not only do elections have consequences, but it’s a winner takes all government, so shut up.
It’s all over the news media. A quick few examples just today:
Wisconsin State Journal columnist Chris Rickert: I admit to a certain cynicism when it comes to people willing to sleep on concrete, brave bar-time crowds and get soaked by automatic sprinklers at sunrise — all to protest something as fleeting as one governor’s democratically elected administration. But I do admire their can-do attitude.
Wisconsin State Journal editorial: “Protesters hollering and disrupting meetings at the state Capitol can’t escape this political reality: Votes still beat volume. The ultimate fate of Gov. Scott Walker’s policy agenda will be decided at the ballot box, not by the sheer numbers of — or noise from — demonstrators on the Square in Madison. Protesters hollering and disrupting meetings at the state Capitol can’t escape this political reality: Votes still beat volume.
This letter to the editor: “Desecration around Capitol is disgusting-Whether I believe in what the action is all about or not, I cannot see how anyone can desecrate the area around our state Capitol with tents.
The Capitol square is “holy ground” now? How dare protesters protest…you know, like they did over Obama’s health care reform when Democrats held super majorities? Is "shut up" a little late in coming?
Democratic protesting in Wisconsin is now described as Capitol chaos, union thuggery, vandalism and mob rule.
WTDY’s Sly in the Morning dealt with this “one party rule” concept, along with commentary by the Nation’s John Nichols. This Republican meme is important, because it has the potential to move the country over dramatically to a more dictatorial, authoritarian conservative government. A government of paranoid armed insecure hobbyists, and the concept of “Second Amendment remedies.”
