Citizen Action of Wisconsin couldn't have said it better when it comes to our current "free market" health care system:
In a series of statements and actions this week the Walker Administration has taken the position that health insurance hyperinflation on Wisconsin’s private health insurance market is not a problem that calls for fundamental reform. Walker officials have defended an insurance market which has seen premiums nearly doubleover the last decade while average Wisconsin household income dropped 14.5%.
Insurance Commissioner Ted Nickel hailed a Wisconsin health insurance market which he claims “ensures that insurance costs are manageable and that consumers have a choice.” Nickel further asserted that “it is our competitive market that is directly responsible for 95 percent of Wisconsinites having access to affordable coverage.”
However, a new Families USA report, co-released today by Citizen Action of Wisconsin, showed that the competitive health market place and Medicaid expansion under the Affordable Care Act will give consumers much better health insurance choices, and save middle and low income Wisconsin households an average of $2,040 per year in health insurance premiums and cost sharing.
The Walker Administration’s position that the health insurance marketplace is working for consumers is absurd on its face, and shows a stunning detachment from harsh economic and health care realities facing hard pressed Wisconsin working families.
