Simac's "Truck Stop" Tour...ILL Conceived?
Tea Party crazy Kim Simac, challenging Sen. Jim Holperin, has decided to insult potential voters by assuming they'll be damn impressed with a pickup truck, cracked windshield and a really big sign on the flatbed. She calls it a "Truck Stop Tour," which is kinda funny because there are a lot of out state truckers...at truck stops. Doh. Scott Brown must be turning in his Senate seat. Don't get the problem here. Dave Zein was enormously popular for doing this exact kind of thing. H'ed hit all the tiny coffee shops and truck stop on his bike starting at 5 a.m. to catch the farmers and...truckers. To chat with them as people, not necessarily about hard core issues. That carried Zein a LOOOONG way.
ReplyDeleteIf she meets eye-to-eye with people while driving around - that's going to have positive impact. Sean Duffy put on a plaid shirt and grabbed a chain saw and mounted a log. Talked to a bunch of people at the Ojibwa Bowling lanes. That was pretty much his entire campaign. It worked.
Moulton owns a Huntin and Fishing' store. Bernier emphasized her own "Northwoodsiness" to win. She actually wasn't that popular of a lady as County Clerk, went against the grain a bit too much, but people got behind her message once she adopted Tea Party rhetoric and talked about guns and hunting.
Simac's truck stop tour will appeal to all us flea-pickin' Out State Morons who live in mobile homes and drive trucks for a living. Of which there are quite a few in Simac's area. And I'm gonna guess that there's not a lot of Union workers up there either. So a guy who has big allegiance to DOWN STATE unions led by people with their pinkies in the air, as opposed to his own neighbors, that might not be seen as too cool. Time will tell.
Also if Holperin has been "Career Politician" since 1982, that's not going to be a plus for him in a lot of people's eyes in this political climate. Other than that I don't know enough about how HE has behaved to call this one either way. But I do admit right now I feel like jumping into a truck and voting for Kim Simac. I still don't know what's funny about a truck with a sign on it. Nor how that is offensive to voters.
Anyways, there's reasons why Democrats often don't do well in areas like the Northwoods, and apparently they have no intention of ever doing well (they can groom Tony Schultz for the purpose all they want), or of ever dropping the attitude. (i.e. Out State is a stupid term which implies Madison and Milwaukee are "real" Wisconsin and the rest is just sort of...unappealing crust)
Unfortunately for people with that attitude there are a lot less giggles on election days, when they have to deal with the numbers, and the hard cold fact that their message is not getting "out state".
And that snickering condescension does not win supporters.
Oh well, it's all funny. Yep, Senator Harsdorf is really amused right about now. And if Holperin thinks trucks are as funny as you do, he's going to be the one alienating voters, not her - and we'll be looking at a Teabagger sitting in his seat. Hopefully he has more of a clue.

It really is about image to conservatives isn't it. All show. Empty show. Zein is a lousy example to give, since he was crazy right wing and a real mean spirit cuss. I had a chance to interview him, and he had a chance to bash me on the floor of the Senate. But aww shucks, he rode around in a truck. Sean Duffy is an elitist wanna be. Plaid shirt? Give me a break. All show...imaging. But I know, he's struggling with a few homes, and a lousy big government paycheck.

You down home folks are fakes. You think stupidity and cliches are a badges of honor, and idol worship centered around plaid shirts and pickup trucks makes you a real Americans. Last I looked, I'm one too. You're trashing our country.
Oh, I forgot, you're going to take your country back from me, because you're the real "mobile home livin'" thing. Or back from a black guy we elected as president.
I live in Alberta Darling's District 8 and have a number of questions she will not answer, despite repeated requests. Maybe these questions will make a few District 12 folks think before they head for the polls next Tuesday. First of all, there was a lot of ads running about the Dems passing big tax increases during the Doyle years. The Repubs have been in office since January. Why haven't they repealed those tax increases? Perhaps they were a good idea???
ReplyDeleteSecond, regarding that budget. The 2009-11 spending budget was $62,192,112,300. The 2011-2013 spending budget is $64,323,927,000, (nearly a $2 billion increase) the largest budget in state history. How is this being fiscally conservative?
Third question: if we now have the largest budget in state history and we cut $1,007,693,700 from education and the state saved millions with the increased health insurance and retirement contributions, where did the money go?
Finally, I see Darling is co-sponsoring Senate Bill 22, a bill which authorizes the Gov. and Legislative leaders to set up charter schools in any district in the state without local input or control. The charter schools (brick and mortar or virtual) will take all their funding out of the school aid budget, increasing your local school operating deficit. Who will benefit by this plan? Who will get paid?
Please consider one last point: Kids need to be educated, roads need to be fixed, garbage needs to be picked up. The question is who receives the money for providing these services: your family, neighbors and community or an out-of-state corporation whose incentive is to make a profit? If profit is the incentive, how much do they care about YOU?
