Greta Van Susteren talked with State Sen. Leah Vukmir about her recent raucous Wauwatosa town hall meeting . Her partner at the meeting, Rep. James Sensenbrenner, shut it down abruptly after fed up citizens showed up to register their opposition to Scott Walker's assault on the middle class and labor rights. See the whole clip here.
What message did Vukmir take from a room full of angry constituents? As she tells it, they were an organized mob there to intimidate her. The conservative mind sees the protesters as disobedience actors challenging their authority and judgement. The protest simply made their case. No, really.
Vukmir: "The whole issue of collective bargaining rights was really highlighted by what happened here, by this intimidation that was done by the mob in this room, and clearly it was emblematic of what the people in our local communities and our school boards are recognizing and realizing as they go through the collective bargaining process, and it makes the case why we need to have collective bargaining reform.
See, objecting to this assault on labor merely reaffirms how unmanageable workers are and justifies reigning them in.
Vukmir: "It was as you described, a mob, and it was a very organized mob that was designed and planned ahead to do two things; to disrupt and too intimidate. And while they did manage to disrupt, they haven't managed to intimidate...clearly the folks that were there, who had been organized to be there, wanted nothing to do with hearing what I had to say. Time and time again as I tried to speak, they talked over me, they shouted and it was rather discouraging and huh, at times, very disrespectful.
Vukmir thought she could get away with spewing mindless talking points to grownups who know better, manage family expenses, have kids and work hard.
Isn't it funny how differently Republicans view protests at their town hall meetings. The misinformed low information voters shouting down Democrats over "death panels" were justifiably angry, especially those who carried in their own instruction printouts on how to disrupt the meeting. Middle class workers seeing their rights, wages and job security fall away are tossed off as an "organized mob."http://democurmudgeon.blogspot.com/2011/03/conservative-wauwatosa-shouts-down.html
