This should make you wonder why something was never written into the constitution guaranteeing your right to vote. Lawrence O'Donnell talks to Mo Rocca about his film, "Electoral Dysfunction":
The men who drew up and ratified the Consitution were by and large from the wealthiest families of society, whether it was the plantation owners of the south or the merchant class of New England. Our first President, George Washington, was in fact the richest man in the United States, having swindled veterans of the Seven Years War out of their land grants.
Imagine what a new Constitution would look if it were written by modern oligarchs such as the Koch brothers, Sheldon Adelson and the Walton family.
In a sense, the fight for liberty and equality in our country has been defined by a continuous battle against the Constitution of the founding oligarchs. For most of our history equality has in fact been unconstitutional. Many Republicans argue that it still is.
