In a state that elected Gov. Mitch Daniels, their damn smart when it comes to education.
The public overwhelmingly wants to improve public education, putting their money into a known system, and completely rejecting the voucher snake oil promises of innovation and competition.
The Journal Gazette: A public opinion showed confidence in some of Gov. Mitch Daniels’ ideas for changes but low support for others, such as school vouchers.
The Center for Evaluation and Education Policy at Indiana University’s School of Education said … nearly two-thirds of Hoosiers said the best way to change those schools would be to retrain teachers and principals, change instructional practices and extend student learning and teacher planning time.
Only 6.5 percent chose the option of providing financial support to families with children in failing public schools to offset tuition at another public or private school – commonly known as vouchers.
“Taxpayers want money to remain in public education, rather than choice options,” said Terry Spradlin, the center’s director of education policy.
