Republicans gunning for elimination of 48 hour “cooling off period” for handgun purchases: “If someone is intent on…murder, they will find a way to do it, be it a bat, knife….”

I'm hoping this isn't going over well with conservative voters. This daffy and radicalized imposter party that calls itself the Republican now wants to put loaded guns into the hands of pissed off abusers, neighbors, and party goers because, well, they don’t believe a 24 hour cooling off period is “a viable argument.” Nothing dangerous here. Below is the shocking press release from Rep. Jesse Kremer that presents three bizarre ideas:

1. Kremer is calling it a “time tax,” and we know how much Republicans hate taxes. So get rid of it. It’s all marketing folks, that’s what it is.

2. “Cooling down” periods are silly, no one should have to wait.

3. Local gun shops say raging gun owners may lose the dire to buy a gun. Getting rid of the waiting period will benefit them and their raging customers. What could go wrong?

“Yesterday, legislation to eliminate the 48 hour waiting period for handgun purchases … added to state law in 1976, prior to the implementation of statutory background checks. This antiquated, two day waiting period amounts to a time tax on Wisconsin businesses and consumers, forcing wasted time and money when background checks are often completed within an hour.”

“I understand that opponents of this legislation will argue that the two day period is an essential ‘cooling off’ period; However, I do not consider this a viable argument. If someone is intent on committing the crime of murder, they will find a way to do it — be it with a bat, knife or an illegally purchased weapon,” states Rep. Kremer.

Shockingly, Kremer is concerned about gun shops making money, screw the dead spouse and kids:

“In speaking with local businesses, the elimination of this waiting period will be a huge benefit to them and their customers, while still keeping the necessary checks in place to help prevent guns from falling into the hands of criminals.” 

Congratulations to those in the 59th Assembly District. I hope everyone in Southern Calumet, Western Sheboygan, Northern Washington and Eastern Fond du Lac Counties let their Representative know how great this idea is.

After Pregnant Woman Shot, GOP Protect Gun Range from Liability. Another “free market” big government gift!

Shooting ranges need protection, not the general public? That's the first reaction from our ghoulish Republican majority. 

It must be so hard to survive in the “free market” without Republican style big government protection. I have to admit, this is the first time I've run across this legislative sop to gun losers everywhere.

The following legislation is another angry over-the-top GOP response to…believe it not, a pregnant woman getting shot outside a restaurant in Delafield by an errant bullet from a nearby gun range:

Just another law restricting the rights of local citizens. And unlike a real free market situation where no one is protected artificially from responsibility, Republicans continue their fantasy that consumers have an unfair advantage over businesses. This is so ridiculously sick:

The bill also makes the owners, board and employees of shooting ranges immune from lawsuits based on the negligence of a shooter at the range.

The legislation results from a case in Delafield in which a pregnant woman dining outside at a restaurant a quarter mile from the Hartland Sportsmen's Club was struck by a pistol round. The bullet created a bruise on her abdomen and scratched her, drawing some blood. She was treated at a local hospital; doctors said her baby was fine.

How do they sleep at night...I don't really know.

Without our first freedom, guns, nothing else matters. Despite the fact that health care doesn't revolve around guns; our justice system has almost nothing to do with guns; our economic policy doesn't; education doesn't….you get the idea.

We don’t just disagree about policy, the way government is run, we must also fear and destroy the enemies of the country who we disagree with and that don't like guns. It's the "others" among us that don’t naturally include gays, guns and God in their conservation.

That’s the Republican Tea Party today. They’ve been quite upfront about their intentions. The presidential candidates promised to appoint conservative justices and judges. I dare any Democrat to make that kind of proposal when it comes to liberal judges. They also know that Obama’s going to take away their guns?

Newsmax email alert to me: NRA Chief: 2012 Election ‘Most Dangerous in Our Lifetime’: Wayne LaPierre, executive vice president of the National Rifle Association, warns that President Barack Obama intends to "destroy the Second Amendment" during his second term and "end our freedom forever."

The LaPierre CPAC speech has been published in the April issue of "America’s 1st Freedom," the official journal of the NRA. Gun possession is really America’s “First Freedom?” Really?

Asserting that the Second Amendment is the "heart and soul" of America, LaPierre says: "Our soul is at stake in this election. All of our Second Amendment liberty, all of the rights we’ve worked so hard to defend, all of what we know is good and right about America — all of it could be lost if Barack Obama is re-elected."

Appealing to the guttural built in paranoia and distrust of “the other,” like the foreign, Muslim, Black, liberal, socialist traitor, LaPierre couldn’t have been more obvious.

Obama’s strategy, he says, is to "get re-elected and, with no more elections to worry about, get busy dismantling and destroying our firearm freedom. Erase the Second Amendment from the Bill of Rights and excise it from the U.S. Constitution."

LaPierre lets the “conservative activist judges” plan out of the bag:

During his second term Obama would likely appoint from one to three Supreme Court justices, and three more liberal justices will mean "the end of our freedom forever," LaPierre declares. “This is the most dangerous election in our lifetime. If Obama wins, we’ll go to our grave mourning the freedom we’ve lost.”

Just like when we had a lot more gun laws. Oh yeah, we didn’t lose our freedoms. 

Armed Citizens=a Safe Society? Then what can explain....

There seems to be a hesitation when it comes to a not so well regulated militia....

Patch: Brookfield Mayor Steve Ponto Tuesday said aldermen should debate whether to ban concealed weapons from city buildings before the state law goes into effect this fall. After the meeting, Ponto said in an interview he was leaning against allowing weapons … The Whitefish Bay Village Board voted unanimously last week to ban concealed firearms from being carried into village-owned properties. Signs will be erected prohibiting guns in the Village Hall, library, police, fire and public works buildings, as well as village buildings within parks. 

Packin' at the Packers!? Remember, this is Green Bay.

Can't wait to take the family up for a Packer game this fall. Did anyone think for a moment about everyone else who might not feel secure, or safe, with a bunch of drunk concealed carry gun-blingers walking around? Guess the constitutional guarantees only apply to the steel penis holders. 

Lambeau Field considers concealed carry: AP-Lambeau Field officials are trying to determine how the soon-to-be concealed carry law will affect them.  The bill allows the carrying of concealed weapons but not in buildings owned or leased by the state.  Pat Webb is the executive director of the Green Bay/Brown County Professional Football Stadium District. Webb tells WLUK-TV (http://bit.ly/iQftNF) he doesn't know if the law officially considers Lambeau a government building.  Gov. Scott Walker is expected to sign the bill after July 4thand the law is expected to go into effect in October or November.  Green Bay Police Captain Paul Ebel says they are dissecting the law and planning to consult with the city's attorneys and the Packers organization.  The NFL says guns are not allowed in any NFL stadium.

Misogyny in Music

Three recent music posts have had a common theme, the same theme as many of our other news-related posts, misogyny.

I'm opposed to censorship in music, to Parental Advisory labels and all that nonsense, but I'm also opposed to passively receiving the messages in these songs with a type of apathetic acceptance. I find that some rap music, with its in-your-face message of violence, can be easily recognized for what it is and enjoyed without subconsciously taking the lyrics to heart. The suggestion that music like that is responsible for violence is absurd.

Main stream and classic rock and roll, however, with its incredibly pervasive and pernicious message about women, goes largely unnoticed and accepted. Take this one for example. Neil Young is actually singing about having shot his woman for cheating on him. Everyone knows the Jimi Hendrix version of the ballad Hey Joe. Same message there, shoot the offending woman. But, did you realize that even The Beatles sang about this?

One interesting difference is the U.K. artists refer to a generic killing while their North American counterparts specify doing it with a gun.

It's interesting that male-dominated rock and roll music is shot through with this ugly message. More interesting still is that it is largely unrecognized for what it is.  It's no wonder that domestic violence is as widespread as it is. And like all types of violence, gun availability makes it worse.
