This story has gotten lots of statewide press, and the Republicans are on the receiving end of lots of undeserved praise.
On a federal level, our Wisconsin lawmakers in congress are more than
willing to give up our privacy to employers. Yet statewide it’s just the
opposite? What gives?
This happens often. Republicans take both sides of an issue,
and play the press for fools, who are willing participants.
Not only that, the Democratic author of the bill trying to protect
citizens from employer prying, isn't even asked their opinion.
Instead, the media always defers to the incoherent party, our Republican hypocrites, because if they like something then that's big news:
Sheboygan Press: A Wisconsin state lawmaker is pushing legislation that would prevent employers from requiring employees or job applicants to provide access to their personal social media accounts.
The proposal, introduced by freshman Rep. Melissa Sargent, D-Madison, has quickly gained bipartisan support in the Legislature. Rep. Garey Bies, a Republican from Sister Bay who’s co-sponsoring the bill, said social media access should be protected and people shouldn’t be expected to give it to employers or potential employers. “I don’t think it is right that people could demand it from you for any consideration,” Bies said. “They shouldn’t use it against you or put you in a position where you had to make that decision.”
Bies should talk to his comrades in Congress and get a
handle on this ridiculous and intentional mixed message. Here's the story from last week:
PASSWORD PRIVACY: Voting 189 for and 224 against, defeating a bid to protect the privacy of social networking passwords as part of HR 624. The Democratic measure sought to prohibit employers from requiring employees to divulge passwords to sites such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn as a condition of employment. A yes vote backed the motion.
Voting yes: Pocan, Kind, Moore
Voting no: Ryan, Sensenbrenner, Petri, Duffy, Ribble
