Red Neck Party Welcomes Scott Walker in Tennessee

Poor Scott Walker, even in Tennessee, he can't escape the protests.

A group calling itself the Redneck Party is planning to protest a speech by Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker.

Tennessian: A group calling itself the Redneck Party is planning to protest a speech by Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker.

“We want Walker to feel right at home,” says the Facebook page for the group’s Tennessee chapter.

The Facebook page also had this:

We will be mounting a huge visibility event in solidarity with our Brothers and Sisters in Wisconsin. We hope to have participants from throughout the region, from Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois to Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia, and from Arkansas and Missouri to North Carolina and Virginia.

And the name?

The organization says it’s a reference to a labor movement in West Virginia in which coal miners once wore red bandanas in a sign of solidarity. But they’re none too shy about making use of the usual etymology of “redneck” as a Southern farmer. They describe Walker as a Northern “carpetbagger” who’s just in the state to raise money for his recall campaign.

As of midday Friday, nine self-described rednecks had pledged on Facebook to attend the rally.
