We are a society that cannot afford the arts, as schools shed the talented "elite."

I don’t even know where to begin with the following:
jsonline: With MPS proposing the elimination of 28 full-time art teachers, 37 full-time physical education positions and 20 full-time music positions, are the arts, as most adults know them, going to be dead next year in city schools? That depends on your perspective.
"Will there be full-time art teachers in every school? No," said Kim Abler, the district's art curriculum specialist. "Is it a place we've never been before? Yes. But is it dead? No…
Art, physical ed...who needs them? But the Republican villains of education, those nasty union teachers weren't so nasty:
Other districts worked with their teachers unions to make up for the anticipated loss of funding. For example, Wauwatosa Public Schools isn't expecting to have any major changes in staffing next year - in the arts or otherwise - despite facing a reduction of about $6 million under Walker's budget proposal.
Public funding for schools will continue to decrease under Republican rule, and those days of working class artists and musicians making a working class living and adding to the richness of society, will fade from the public square and marketplace.

Check out this amazing response from a musician about his "wasted" life in the arts.
