Oklahoma Republicans Hypocritical Regulating Marriage and Divorce. Big Government? Or does "The intervention is minimal" Excuse work for You?

Oklahoma Republican wedge issues just hit the fan, so to speak, when the anti-government right wing and tea party movement balked at the hypocrisy of two conflicting agendas; Should government intervene on the issue of marriage and divorce... or not.

Republican members proposed three pieces of legislation imposing new regulations on marriage and divorce in Oklahoma … (where) the state has the third highest divorce rate in the nation … attributed in part to poverty, teenage pregnancy and a tradition of marrying early. The issue has produced sharp clashes among conservative colleagues (with) charges of hypocrisy and of betraying Republican principles against government intrusion into private lives.

"How far do I want government to come into my home and your home about private personal matters?" asked Rep. Leslie Osborn, a Republican from Tuttle, in a debate. She referred to state government as a "huge monster."

An ironic statement considering how bigoted Republicans have passed laws and constitutional amendments banning gay marriage, a blatant example of government coming "into my home and your home about private personal matters." But did you know there are degrees of government intervention?:

But supporters of the new divorce legislation insisted it was a valid area for government action. "The intervention is minimal," said Rep. Mark McCullough, a Republican from Sapulpa.

I have a feeling that if and when another a Republican administration tries to wield its authoritarian hand over what they believe to be freedom in America, with new wedge issue laws pushing a social agenda, conservatives will use the "intervention is minimal" excuse.

It's interesting to note that Oklahoma not only has the 3rd highest divorce rate, but also the highest rates of church attendance. Coincidence?
