Wow, we're living in a world where everybody ought to doe the right thing. I didn't know.Deseret News: While all people should be treated with respect, gay and lesbian Utahns do not need legal protection against discrimination, Gov. Gary Herbert said. Herbert stopped short of condemning Salt Lake City's proposed anti-discrimination ordinance, but said a fair-housing and employment law for the state's lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community would unnecessarily create a new "protected class." "Where do you stop? That's the problem going down that slippery road. Pretty soon we're going to have a special law for blue-eyed blondes," Herbert said.
Equality Utah saw the bills of its Common Ground Initiative, which would have provided fair housing, employment and hospital visitation rights to the state's gay community, die in legislative committees earlier this year ... at least one state lawmaker has said he would work to quash the ordinance should it be approved. "We've never done what they're asking," said Sen. Chris Buttars, R-West Jordan, "nor have I seen any evidence that it needs to be done."
On Thursday, Herbert said he had not read the ordinance. Still, Herbert said he worried about the economic impact of creating a new "protected class." Business could be hurt if a new group of employees could stop their bosses from firing them, he said.
"That makes it difficult for employers to actually conduct their business," Herbert said, warning it would be a "significant problem within our business community."We don't have to have a rule for everybody to do the right thing. We ought to just do the right thing because it's the right thing to do and we don't have to have a law that punishes us if we don't."

Utah's Republican Governor Herbert says, Gays don't need to be protected.
Take note of how moronic the governor of Utah sounds explaining why he would reject any law protecting gay individuals from discrimination. Oddly, Gov. Herbert doesn't have any clue, yet was still elected to the highest state post.
