Not enough is being written about the investigations into the alleged embezzlement scheme at the National Republican Congressional Committee , even as it turns up some surprising tidbits.
NRCC officials accused their former treasurer of cooking their books for several years. Keep in mind, they did not do any auditing over a five year period. Needless bureaucratic paperwork I guess.
The cash-strapped NRCC is trying to determine the amount of money allegedly diverted by Christopher Ward, the NRCC's former treasurer. The FBI is investigating Ward for possible embezzlement and bank fraud. What does this say about the conservative culture of family values and fiscal leadership we’ve heard so much about?
NRCC officials revealed that nearly $1 million was missing. This was money managed by the now discredited “fiscal conservative” wing of the Republican Party.
In what has to be an unfortunate, yet humorous irony, some NRCC Committees have now disclosed irregularities by filing amended campaign finance reports. You’ve got to appreciate the committee titles and the cash they “displaced.”
The Prosperity Helps Insure Liberty PAC, reported losing $17,000 in “misappropriated funds” in late 2007.
The Commitment to Outstanding Leadership and Direction PAC, reported saying a $20,000 disbursement April 2, 2007, as “misappropriated funds.”
Here’s a line out of a Washington Post story I think says it all: “The NRCC’s bank account fell prey to some internal hanky panky, with losses hidden by fake audit reports.”
When you’re a Republican, and an avowed enemy of audits, red tape, government regulations and book keeping 101, it would be crazy to sell this irresponsible Party agenda as a way to help the rest of the country.
